Why Nigeria Can’t Fight Corruption – Calabar Anglican Bishop

July 12, (THEWILL) – The Anglican Bishop of Calabar, Rt. Rev. Prof. Nneoyi Egbe, says Nigeria’s Institutions are built on lies and so cannot fight corruption.

He said we have become acclimatised to the lies we have told ourselves for so long that every further step we take is a comedy.

The Anglican Bishop of Calabar disclosed this during a statement on the state of the nation he released during the 2nd Session of the Eleventh Synod of the diocese.

He added that nothing has changed for the better in Nigeria for the past seven years.

In his words, “There is clear evidence that nothing has changed for the better in the last seven years, in spite of all the hue and cry across the nation.

“We have progressively fallen lower and lower and currently appear to be rolling downhill under very high acceleration.

“What comes to mind here, is that we have become acclimatised to the lies we have told ourselves for so long that every further step we take is a comedy.

“Our institutions are built on these lies which is why we cannot fight corruption.

“We talk so much, have proven, bright, analytical minds all over the country.

” Yet the same minds placed in any position of responsibility produce nothing but lies”, he said.

This failure, he said, is seen in the lack of proper revision of the 1999 constitution, education, economy and security.

On politics, the cleric faulted the selection of a Muslim/Muslim presidential ticket, saying it does not reflect the secularity of the country.

He said, “we absolutely do not, will not and cannot accept a Muslim/Muslim or christian/christian ticket, and our secularity must be respected by our leaders.”

He thanked God for the relative peace in parts of the diocese and communities in Calabar and also praised God for not punishing the state for the tenor of its sins and iniquities.

He, however, drew the attention of the Cross River State government to certain experiences in the state.

These, he said, are uncompleted projects, insecurity, inter-communal crisis and lack of monitoring of mining activities in the state.
