October 28, (THEWILL) – Manchester City’s perfect run in the Carabao Cup came to an end on Wednesday night as they lost a penalty shootout against West Ham at the London Stadium after a goalless 90 minutes.

The first few minutes were tense and cagey, with Mark Noble’s speculative effort palmed away by Zack Steffen. Kevin De Bruyne’s cross on the counter was deflected by Craig Dawson.

As City struggled to break down West Ham, Cole Palmer’s stinging shot from distance was saved by Alphonse Areola’s feet.

At halftime, the game remained goalless, but Arthur Masuaku came close to putting the hosts ahead immediately after the interval. He tried dribbling through the City defence but was pushed away from danger, but a sliced shot just missed Steffen’s goal.

A few minutes later, Palmer freed Ilkay Gundogan at the other end, but the German was caught off guard and his cross-shot flew harmlessly wide.

At the other end, Masuaku was causing City further difficulties, forcing a save from Steffen before Zinchenko saved a rebound from compatriot Andriy Yarmolenko.

As the game heated up, Areola was on hand to deny Raheem Sterling, Kevin De Bruyne, and John Stones all within a two-minute span, while Tomas Soucek pulled a 12-yard attempt wide.

Gundogan was on the receiving end of a deflected cross from substitute Phil Foden, but Areola denied him from six yards.

As the clock ticked down, Zinchenko’s powerful shot from 25 yards was turned over by the France international, and Sterling’s header was denied in the final seconds, sending the match to penalties.

West Ham took an early lead as Noble scored the first penalty and Foden’s attempt went wide of the goal giving the David Moyes’ charges confidence. Bowen scored to keep the Hammers going, as did Joao Cancelo. Then, Craig Dawson and Gabriel Jesus both scored as well.

Despite the fact that Grealish kept City’s hopes alive, Cresswell scored West Ham’s fourth goal, and Said Benrahma stepped up to eliminate City from the Carabao Cup.

Guardiola’s squad had won the competition for the previous four years in a row. However, this penalty shootout loss implies that the trophy will be handed over to a new winner this season.

It was a massive triumph for Moyes’ side as they continue to defy the odds in the league, as well as in domestic and European cup tournaments so far.
