January 27, (THEWILL) – Watford have confirmed the signing of Nigerian international winger Samuel Kalu from French club FC Girondins de Bordeaux on a contract that runs until June 2025.

The Nigerian becomes the January window’s fourth new signing. At Vicarage Road, he will be joined by Hassane Kamara, Samir, and Edo Kayembe. After three-and-a-half years in France’s top flight, where he scored nine goals, the 24-year-old joins the Hornets.

Kalu is a versatile option in a competitive squad, capable of playing on either flank. He usually plays on the right wing.

After relocating to Europe from Nigeria, the quick-footed forward began his career with AS Trenn in Slovakia, and after a string of good performances, he was transferred to Belgian giants KAA Gent in 2017.

In August 2018, he moved to Bordeaux, where he has made 86 appearances for Les Girondins. Kalu has also played Europa League and Champions League qualifying matches for his three prior clubs, giving him plenty of European and international experience.

The winger, who made his Super Eagles debut in September 2018, has 17 caps for Nigeria and scored on his most recent competitive start against Benin.

At Watford, he will wear the number 28 as he becomes the fourth Nigerian to be on Roy Hodgson’s squad. He will be joining goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, defender William Troost-Ekong, midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo and forward Emmanuel Dennis in the Hornets and will hope to help them escape relegation this season.
