Verstappen Takes Dutch GP, Extends Lead At Top Of Standings

September 04, (THEWILL) – In dramatic circumstances, late in his home race in Zandvoort, Max Verstappen of Red Bull, secured his 10th victory of the 2022 season, extending his lead in the driver’s championship to 109 points.

George Russell of Mercedes finished the race in second place, and Charles Leclerc of Ferrari completed the podium in third. Lewis Hamilton, who was incensed that his team’s last-minute tactical decision jeopardized his hopes of contending for the victory, was forced to settle for fourth place.

Verstappen took the lead at the start of the race, followed by Carlos Sainz in third and Charles Leclerc in second.

Although F1 fans chose Max Verstappen as the driver of the day, Russell deserves this honour for the number of positions—four to be exact—he gained on the track.

A podium finish appeared improbable at the outset of the race after starting in P6 following a less-than-ideal qualifying session. But he kept up with his teammate’s pace throughout, and the decision to switch to soft tires for the final 11 laps, which was made late, enabled him to secure yet another strong podium result.
