December 16, (THEWILL) – The death has been announced of Sinisa Mihajlovic, at the age of 53, with tributes honouring him as “an icon of football and life.”

After a battle with leukaemia, Mihajlovic, who had a distinguished career playing for clubs like Sampdoria, Lazio, Roma and Inter, passed suddenly.

He was initially diagnosed of leukaemia in July 2019, but the former Yugoslavia international kept on his coaching career with Bologna.

Mihajlovic received treatment, but in March, leukaemia worries surfaced once more and six months later, the Serie A team had to part ways with him to allow him focus on his health.

The tributes have been flowing with Bologna posting: “Goodbye Mister, you will forever be in our hearts.”

A statement from Lazio read: “Lazio mourns the passing of Sinisa Mihajlovic: a great Lazio man, a warrior on the pitch and in life. His courage on the pitch was second only to that shown in the face of a serious illness, which never weakened him in spirit and temper.

“An indelible trace in the history of Lazio will remain of this fighter with a big heart, not only for having been champion of Italy, but for the message of hope in the face of the difficulties that he was able to represent up to the last moment of his life. We will remember him as he deserves, with the infinite embrace of his team and his people. Our deepest condolences to the family.”

Over on Twitter, Fiorentina, who Mihajlovic coached over a decade ago, posted: “RIP Sinisa. Fiorentina mourns the death of Sinisa Mihajlovic and gathers around the family and loved ones.”

From Italy’s top flight Serie A came a statement that said: “Lega Serie A is deeply saddened by the passing of Sinisa Mihajlovic, an icon of football and life. His pure class as a footballer and coach, his strength and his humanity are an example that leaves an indelible mark on Italian and world football.”

Mihajlovic was an expert at set pieces and had a terrific left foot. Although he could play in midfield, he primarily played as a defender for his country, making 63 appearances and tallying 10 goals. After winning the European Cup while playing for Red Star Belgrade, he won the Serie A championship with both Lazio and Inter.
