Theatre Festival Berths In Lagos, Celebrates Soyinka

July 06, (THEWILL) – Live Theatre Lagos has announced the July Theatre Festival, a celebration of Nigerian theatre, arts and culture holding in Lagos, Nigeria.

Hosted in partnership with Theatre Hub Africa, the July Theatre Festival is a two-weekend-long line-up of amazing plays, spectacular music, and life-changing talk sessions on theatre, culture and the arts, all happening for free.

This one-of-a-kind event would span two weekends in July and each weekend will feature four performances of the selected plays.

The first play will be Wole Soyinka’s “The Lion and The Jewel,” which will be shown on July 10th and 11th, by 3pm and 6pm.

The play is produced by Oluwanishola Adenugba, directed by Kelvinmary Ndukwe and parades amazing thespians such as Ropo Ewenla, Diana Agbede, Bunmi Sogade, Martin Chukwu, Timi Ojeola, Paul Origbo, Ekomobong Udonwa, Oriyomi Joseph amongst others.

The second play, “Oluronbi –The Musical,” is based on a popular legend and it is written, co-produced and directed by Tunde “Mister Rain” Ojoobaro. It will show on July 17 and 18 by 3pm and 6pm on both days. The productions features Olumide Isedowo, Funmi Ayedogbon, Wale Are, Tundun Cymbals and an array of other fine and dedicated actors ,poets, musicians and dancers

This free-to-attend festival would be held at the Glover Memorial Hall, Customs Street, beside the Nigerian Exchange Group, Marina, Lagos.

The festival would be brought to a close with a free concert headlined by musical maestro and guitarist, Femi Leye, on July 19 by 6pm

In addition to providing world-class entertainment with an authentic Nigerian flair, the festival seeks to educate and stimulate the next generation of Nigerian storytellers by inviting them to the showing of one of their selected literary texts for WASSCE, The Lion and the Jewel.

“Working with the Lagos State Ministry of Education, we have invited and are inviting students from Lagos State Public and Private Senior Secondary schools to the play,” affirmed Mr Oluwanishola Adenugba, convener of the July Theatre Festival.

He added that the festival is also aimed at celebrating Prof. Wole Soyinka, literary giant and political activist who turns 86 on July 13, 2021.

Adenugba stated that, “As the world is opening up we are also hoping to harness cultural and social harmony and education in a COVID-19 safety compliant atmosphere,” he added.

“Free seat reservations can be made at the Live Theatre website. Registration is compulsory. COVID-19 safety protocols apply. Donations would be solicited and accepted at the events.
