January 14, (THEWILL) – Spanish champions, Barcelona Femení, maintained their dominance in their domestic league by recording their 49th consecutive win and moving within one victory of an unprecedented 50 league wins in a row.
Once again, Asisat Oshoala was on the scoresheet with a brace as the reigning champions kept their winning streak with a 3-0 victory in the early Saturday match against Sporting Huelva. It may be their 14th victory out of 14 league games this season but it stretches back to their unbroken winning run to the title last season.
Victory against Levante Las Planas on January 25, at Estadi Johan Cruyff, where they have never failed to win since the stadium was opened in 2019, will see them become, according to FIFA, the first team in football history to register 50 consecutive league victories. Their last defeat in the Spanish league came on June 1st, 2021, away to Atlético de Madrid.
Despite recent setbacks in other competitions, such as their first-ever group stage defeat in the UEFA Women’s Champions League against FC Bayern Munich and the possibility of disqualification from the Spanish Cup, the team’s dominance in the league is undeniable. With 49 consecutive victories, their record is far in excess of anything achieved in the men’s game.
The European top-flight men’s record is held by Lisbon side SL Benfica, who recorded 29 consecutive league wins over the course of two Portuguese seasons between 1971 and 1973.
