Iga Swiatek defeated Ons Jabeur 6-2, 7-6(5) in the final at Flushing Meadows, to win her third Grand Slam title and first US Open crown.
The 21-year-old, who already has two victories at Roland-Garros under her belt, elevated her already extraordinary season with yet another incredibly spectacular major victory on the grandest platform.
Earlier this year, Swiatek attained the world number one ranking and won her second French Open competition. In the Saturday final, she once more proved why she is unquestionably the dominant power in women’s tennis.
The Pole got off to an incredible start in the first set, roaring into a three-game lead with an early break and regaining the lead at 4-2 despite Jabeur briefly pegging her back. The unrelenting Swiatek attacked every serve from her rival with such force that the Tunisian, who was aiming to become the first woman from Africa to win a major singles title, became frustrated and lost her rhythm.
With two Grand Slam victories and the top ranking secured, the Warsaw star has had an incredible year. She has once again shown why she is the player everyone else must try to surpass, and not just on clay courts.
