January 01, (THEWILL) – The struggles of Tottenham Hotspur continued on Sunday as they were beaten 2-0 by Aston Villa at their home grounds.

The game started slowly, with both sides failing to create many clear chances. Although Villa’s Ollie Watkins and Spurs’ Matt Doherty had chances to break the deadlock, the first half ended without either side finding the back of the net.

Five minutes into the second half, Villa took the lead through Emiliano Buendia, who tapped in a cut-back from Watkins. Tottenham tried to equalize, with Ivan Perisic missing a good chance to score. Harry Kane also had a half-chance, but he failed to threaten Villa goalkeeper, Robin Olsen.

With 17 minutes left to play, Douglas Luiz sealed the victory for Villa with a well-taken goal. A one-two with John McGinn put him through on goal, and he calmly finished past Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. Tottenham couldn’t find a way back into the game and suffered their latest defeat, leaving manager, Antonio Conte, with more questions to answer.

The margin between Villa and the clubs immediately above them in the standings has narrowed, but they remain in 12th place. On Wednesday, they will face Wolverhampton Wanderers. Spurs are still in fifth place as they pass on the opportunity to overtake Manchester United and return to the top four. Next time out, they go to Crystal Palace.
