BEVERLY HILLS, March 30, (THEWILL) – Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, on Tuesday received the victorious Para-Powerlifting Team Nigeria at the Moshood Abiola Stadium when they arrived from their successful competition in Manchester.

Paralympic powerlifting is an adaptation of the sport of powerlifting for athletes with disabilities.

The only discipline in Paralympic powerlifting is the bench press. The sport is governed by the International Paralympic Committee and is open to anyone with a minimum level of disability who can extend their arms within 20° of full extension during a lift.

The Nigerian contingent gave a remarkably splendid account of themselves at the competition held in Manchester from March 25 to 28, and emerged Champions of the 2021 Para Powerlifting World Cup, by winning 10 Gold and three Silver medals to finish at the summit of the medal standings.

The most outstanding athletes on the Nigerian team were 2012 Paralympic Games and 2014 Commonwealth Games Gold medallist, Loveline Obiji, and 2012 Paralympic Silver medallist, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, and they both dominated the final day’s events.

There was no competition for Obiji, whose unmatched performance in the women’s over 86kg earned her the Gold medal.

Marzena Zieba of Poland had to be content with a second place finish, while Polina Katsman of Israel ended up the bronze medalist.

In Oluwafemiayo’s case, she was not merely worthy of her Gold in the women’s 86kg lift, but she made sure to improve on her own Personal Best of 150kg set at the 2019 World Championships in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, by pushing herself to a new Best of 150.5kg lift in her third attempt, which she aced.

The overall dominance by Team Nigeria was reflected in the medal haul as the emphatic display meant the distance between 1st and 2nd place on the medals table was a yawning gap.

Uzbekistan, which came second, finished with just three Gold medals and one Bronze.

Ukraine came third, managing two Gold medals, five Silver and two Bronze.
