Spain Squeeze Past Switzerland With 1-0 Win In Nations League Tie

June 10, (THEWILL) – With a 1-0 win over Switzerland in Geneva, Spain finally got their UEFA Nations League campaign off the ground.

Spain needed a win after another terrible performance against the Czech Republic on Sunday, and the Swiss, who are yet to earn a point after three defeats in their first three matches were the ideal opponent.

In the 13th minute, Marcos Llorente pounced on a half-hearted Swiss clearance and surged into the box to give Spain the lead. Llorente squared the challenge to Pablo Sarabia, who could not miss from close range. A VAR review determined that there was no offside and the goal stood.

Switzerland improved significantly in the second half but they only seriously challenged the Spanish goal in the dying minutes when Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon made numerous ill-advised incursions beyond his area. But, no goal came forth for the Swiss.

Switzerland lacked the poise and discipline required to outwit the Spaniards like the Czechs had done, and instead resorted to committing fouls to slow down a Spanish team that tried to run rings around them and showing signs of improvement throughout.
