January 07, (THEWILL) – Newcastle United’s impressive run in the 2022/2023 campaign was halted on Saturday, as they suffered the upset of a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup third round.
The League One side took the lead through Josh Windass’ deft finish early in the second half, before doubling their advantage through an emphatic strike just past the hour.
Although Bruno Guimaraes pulled one back for Newcastle with a close-range goal, the Magpies were unable to turn things around and were eliminated from the competition.
This marks the third consecutive season that Newcastle have failed to make it past the third round of the FA Cup, with Wednesday becoming only the second team to beat the Magpies this season and the first since Liverpool on August 31.
Wednesday will now progress to the fourth round for the fifth time in six years.
