September 18, (THEWILL) – Director General of the National Taskforce on the Prohibition of Illegal Importation-Smuggling of Arms, Ammunition, and Light Weapons (NATFORCE), Dr Baba Muhammed, has clarified the controversy over the declaration of the Taskforce as an illegal security outfit.

THEWILL reported that the National Security Council, on Thursday, ordered the disbandment of NATFORCE, declaring its operation illegal.

Briefing newsmen on the directive, Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, had advised the leadership of NATFORCE to disband itself with immediate effect or risk being disbanded forcefully by security agencies.

Reacting to the directive, Muhammed, on Saturday, explained that NATFORCE has been Integrated into the National Commission since July when the Senate passed the bill establishing the NATCOM.

THEWILL recalls that the Senate, in July, passed the bill establishing the National Commission for the Coordination and Control of the Proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NATCOM) and absorbed NATFORCE into the new Commission.

Muhammed, who recalled his efforts towards the transformation of the NATFORCE to NATCOM, maintained that the defunct security outfit remained non-existent

“I championed the need for NATFORCE to transit to a Commission, NATCOM, in line with the provision that stipulates that the functions of the body shall be in line with Article 24 of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Convention on the Proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons to which Nigeria is a signatory and which came into force in 2009.

“I distance myself from NATFORCE and all of its operations after Senate passage of the NATCOM bill which has now automatically changed the name NATFORCE to NATCOM”, he said.

He appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari; Vice President, Yemi Osibanjo; Senate President, Ahmad Lawan; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila; National Security Adviser, Major General Babagana Monguno (rtd) and other critical stakeholders, for providing an enabling environment for the successes being recorded so far in the collective efforts towards the establishment of NATCOM.
