BEVERLY HILLS, March 17, (THEWILL) – After the initial furore over why Nigeria’s coach for the senior men’s national team, Gernot Rohr, did not include Ebere Paul Onuachu, Nigeria’s most in-form striker in Europe as first choice forward but went against his own better judgement to add the clubless Ahmed Musa, relegating Onuachu to the standby list, a twist of fortune has settled the matter.

The highest goal scorer in the Belgian First Division A with his goals keeping his club KRC Genk up in third place, Onuachu is currently having the season of his life with an average 91 minutes per goal contribution and registering a high 1.4 shots on target per game.

The blistering form of the 26-year-old is reflected in the 27 goals and two assists in 30 appearances across all competitions he has notched up for the Smurfs this season on his path to challenging for the season-ending highest goal scorer’s gong.

BEVERLY HILLS, March 17, (THEWILL) – These were some of the reasons many found it difficult to grasp the rationale in picking up Musa, who was yet to find a club, ahead of Onuachu.

However, Onuachu’s call-up as replacement for Moses Simon in the Super Eagles’ squad for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying fixtures against Benin Republic and Lesotho came about as circumstances necessitated because Simon was ruled out of the game following COVID-19 restriction protocols for players coming from France.

The Super Eagles face the Squirrels of Benin Republic at the Stade Charles de Gaulle, Porto-Novo on Saturday, March 27 before contending against the Crocodiles of Lesotho three days later at home in the Surulere Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.

In a similar vein, the injured winger for Ligue 1 club Bordeaux, Samuel Kalu, who earlier made Rohr’s first choice squad has had to be replaced by another in-form forward Henry Onyekuru, who has seen a renewed burst of good form with third return to Turkish Super Lig side Galatasaray from the Ligue 1 club Monaco
