September 03, (THEWILL) – Borussia Dortmund climbed to the top of the Bundesliga standings as Edin Terzic’s team defeated TSG Hoffenheim 1-0 at Signal Iduna Park to record their fourth victory in the first five league fixtures of this season.
Marco Reus’ 16th minute goal won the game and it meant that the Dortmund striker scored his side’s first goal for the 45th time to equal the Bundesliga record for most opening goals ever scored. The BVB captain met Julian Brandt’s first-time through ball inside the area and finished well beyond Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann from an acute angle.
BVB then had a golden opportunity to double their lead in the 22nd minute, but Jamie Bynoe-Gittens could only put his close-range effort just wide of the post. At halftime, Hoffenheim manager Andre Breitenreiter made substitutions, and Die Kraichgauer’s new strategy nearly resulted in an equaliser. However, Georginio Rutter’s close-range effort just missed the far post midway through the second half.
For the remaining part of the half, Dortmund did all they could to hold on and defeat Hoffenheim for a third straight victory and extend their lead at the top of the La Liga standings to two points.
