January 12, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid was pushed all the way by Valencia in a Supercopa de Espana semi-final that required penalty shootouts to resolve after a lacklustre 1-1 tie in the quarter-final with the need for extra time to determine the winner on Wednesday.
Eray Comert, who conceded the penalty for Karim Benzema’s first-half goal, and Jose Gaya both missed from 12 yards as Carlo Ancelotti’s team struggled in Riyadh.
Prior to Giorgi Mamardashvili’s three excellent extra-time saves, Valencia had drawn level thanks to Samuel Lino’s goal in the 46th minute. With no further goals between the teams, the game went to shoot-outs.
Madrid advanced thanks to Comert’s overshot kick and Thibaut Courtois’s save on Gaya. When Los Blancos take on the victors of Thursday’s semi-final between La Liga’s top team Barcelona and Real Betis, they will be vying for their third Supercopa in the previous four years.
Gattuso will be proud of his team’s effort but also frustrated in how they lost. Before playing Almeria in the league, Valencia has a Copa del Rey matchup in Gijon.
