December 31, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid climbed back to the top of La Liga with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Valladolid on Friday.
The match was evenly contested in the first half, with both sides spurning chances to take the lead. Karim Benzema missed a sitter for Real Madrid, while Valladolid had a few forays forward but was unable to convert.
The second half saw Real Madrid increase the pressure in search of a win, but Valladolid’s defence held strong and limited their chances. However, a late penalty was awarded to Real Madrid, and Benzema converted it to give his team the lead. Valladolid’s Sergio Leon was also sent off during the penalty drama, leaving his team with 10 men for the remainder of the match.
Benzema added a second goal just before the final whistle to secure the victory for Real Madrid. The win takes them back to the top of the La Liga table, while Valladolid is in 15th place.
Next week’s Copa del Rey will see both sides return to action as Madrid is on the road to meet Cacereno, while Alaves will play hosts to Valladolid.
