December 05, (THEWILL) – With a 2-0 win over Real Sociedad at the Reale Arena in Domostia-San Sebastian, Real Madrid moved eight points clear at the top of the La Liga table.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side weathered an early storm in the north of Spain, gradually gaining control of the game and eventually winning from an unexpected source.
With 10 minutes on the clock, Eder Militao saved a goal-bound header from Alexander Isak, before Real were forced to make an early substitution when Karim Benzema suffered an injury, replacing him with Luka Jovic.
Vinicius Jr’s low effort was saved by Alex Remiro for Madrid’s first genuine chance of the game, while Sociedad proceeded down the other end and created a similar opportunity for Adnan Januzaj, who shot wide of Thibaut Courtois’ goal.
Rodrygo was the next player to put Remiro to the test before Luka Modric unleashed a direct shot at the Spanish goalkeeper.
In a scramble in the Madrid penalty area on the edge of halftime, Isak, Alexander Sorloth, and Mikel Oyarzabal were unable to convert, and the two teams headed into the break goalless.
In the second half, the visitors exploded out of the blocks, with Rodrygo being denied by Remiro’s shins before Vinicius put them ahead after a quick pass from Jovic.
Minutes later, the much-maligned Serbian striker got one of his own. Casemiro met Toni Kroos’ corner with a run into Jovic’s path and a tap-in.
Sociedad appeared to be knocked out by those quick-fire goals. But, with 20 minutes left, Isak sent a shot wide before Oyarzabal’s in-swinging free-kick flew harmlessly over everyone.
