December 19, (THEWILL) – South Africa’s ruling party, African National Congress (ANC), has re-elected President Cyril Ramaphosa, as its new leader for the next five years, the party announced.

Declaring the result on Monday, Kgalema Motlanthe, the ANC elections chief, said Ramaphosa polled 2,476 votes to defeat his main rival, a former Health Minister, Zweli Mkhize, who scored 1,897.

Ramaphosa’s reelection opens the way for a second term, despite a damaging cash-heist scandal and vociferous internal opposition.
