BEVERLY HILLS, March 05, (THEWILL) – On Thursday, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) opened the bidding process for African countries interested in hosting the inaugural Total CAF Women’s Champions League 2021.

The CAF Women’s Champions League is proposed as an annual international women’s association football club competition on the continent. Organised by CAF, it is intended to be the female counterpart of the CAF Champions League which features men’s football clubs in Africa.

At the CAF Executive Committee meeting held on Tuesday, June 30 last year via video-conferencing to discuss the future competitions and other related issues following the COVID-19 pandemic, the committee decided, due to challenging conditions, to cancel the 2020 edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations but moved the inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League to 2021.

The plan now is to organise the League during the months of October, November or December each year following the resolution of the CAF Executive Committee.

By way of format, the League will have seven teams, who will qualify for the final tournament through a qualifying series to be organised by zonal unions. These will join the champion club from the host country who gains automatic qualification as hosts.

The bidding process begins with the presentation of bidding files by National Football Associations interested in hosting to CAF. These files are expected to contain the stadiums (two stadiums are required) and training facilities (four training sites at least), accommodation plans (that can host the eight teams) on ground, in addition to an official government guarantee approving the bid.

CAF gave the closing date for this part of the process as Wednesday, March 31.
