November 24, (THEWILL) – Switzerland’s World Cup Group G opener saw them defeat Cameroon 1-0 at the Al Janoub Stadium, thanks to a goal from Breel Embolo, who scored against his country of birth.

The Yaounde-born attacker’s second-half tap-in ignited wild celebrations for the Swiss at full time as Murat Yakin’s team handed Cameroon their eighth straight World Cup loss, which is just one short of the record for defeats at the world stage.

Though there were a few red flags for Cameroon immediately before the interval, the Indomitable Lions got the better of the first half and kept Yann Sommer in the Swiss goal somewhat busy. Had their finishing been more clinical, the African team could have been ahead before the interval.

Embolo seemed destined to score after his impressive display. He rightly found the back of the net in the 48th minute, giving Switzerland the victory following a strong second-half performance and leaving the Cameroonians wondering what could have been if they had been less wasteful.

The following fixtures of Group G will see Switzerland take on Brazil with the goal of getting another victory while Cameroon will have to be more decisive when they clash against Serbia.
