BEVERLY HILLS, April 06, (THEWILL) – Brazilian playmaker Philippe Coutinho is set to miss the rest of the 2020/2021 season for La Liga club FC Barcelona after undergoing surgery on a knee injury that has kept him out of contention since December last year. Coutinho sustained some damage to the knee in a frustrating single goal draw against Eibar, where he was introduced as a substitute and had a goal-scoring impact.

Since then, the 28-year-old has been dealing with the medical team to recover and join the season’s campaign with La Blaugrana, who are currently in for no less than two trophies. It had appeared that he had a bye to get into active game-time again before the season’s end but, having now undergone an operation on the injury to that left knee, it is nothing but a definitive end to any football for him.

In an official club statement, Barca said: “Philippe Coutinho underwent surgery successfully by Dr Rodrigo Lasmar on a meniscal cyst in his left knee under the supervision of the club’s medical services. The player is not available for selection and his recovery will dictate his return to action.”

The injury that necessitated this surgery stems from the damage done to his knee in that December draw with Eibar at the Camp Nou. The initial prognosis after he had undergone surgery, at the time, was that Coutinho was going to be sidelined for “approximately three months” as the injury was not considered to be exactly severe.

Now, it has become increasingly apparent that there was more to it than previously believed. And the player will have to jettison all thoughts of returning to any football this season and focus all his attention on his full recovery.

It is unfortunate for the Brazilian, who had only returned to the Catalan club from his victorious loan spell at the Bavarian giants of the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich. Before the unfortunate incident, Coutinho had been a regular contributor under Ronald Koeman and displayed that when he came on as a substitute to contribute to Barcelona’s only goal in that fixture where he got injured.

For the part he played in the season before December, the 28-year-old made 14 appearances in all competitions, scored three times and assisted the team in two more goals at a time when they were going through a tough patch and not operating as was expected of their pedigree.
