January 08, (THEWILL) – Napoli secured a 2-0 victory over Sampdoria on Sunday, with goals from Victor Osimhen and Eljif Elmas.
Osimhen opened the scoring for Napoli, while Elmas scored from the penalty spot in the second half after Ronaldo Vieira, was called for a handball. It was a strong performance from Osimhen, who now has ten goals in Serie A this season.
The records show that he is only the second African player, after George Weah in the mid-1990s, in Serie A history, to score ten or more goals in three different league campaigns. The centre-forward has also contributed three assists and has been able to stay injury-free, which was a concern for him in previous seasons.
On Sunday, Sampdoria put up a fight in the first half, with Bartosz Bereszynski coming close with a shot that hit the post. But Napoli’s dominance proved too much and they were able to hold onto their lead to secure the win.
The result sees Napoli remain at the top of the Serie A table, four points ahead of second-place Inter Milan. They will be looking to maintain their lead as they face off against Lazio in their next match. Meanwhile, Sampdoria will hope to turn their fortunes around as they face off against Fiorentina, also struggling in the bottom half of the table.
