January 21, (THEWILL) – Serie A leaders Napoli eased past underperforming Salernitana 2-0 in the Campania derby at the Stadio Arechi on Saturday.
The visitors dominated the match from start to finish, and despite missing key player Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and starting Matteo Politano on the bench, Napoli had 75% possession in the first half. Salernitana, who had recently reinstated head coach Davide Nicola, adopted a defensive approach after conceding 8 goals in their previous match.
Despite Salernitana’s defensive strategy, Napoli broke through on the stroke of halftime with a goal from Giovanni Di Lorenzo.
Early in the second half, Napoli extended their lead to 2-0 with a goal from standout striker Victor Osimhen who was quick to the rebound, stabbing home from point-blank to give Napoli a comfortable two-goal cushion.
Salernitana had several chances to score, but were unable to convert. Napoli could have also scored more and attempts by Osimhen and his teammates were rebuffed by the heroics of Salernitana goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa. But, the two goals were enough for the I Partenopei to temporarily extend their lead at the top of the league to 12 points.
