November 12, (THEWILL) – Despite facing a late scare against Udinese, Napoli prevailed 3-2 on Saturday to increase their lead in Serie A to 11 points.
Just before the hour mark, Victor Osimhen, Piotr Zielinski, and Eljif Elmas, gave Luciano Spalletti’s team a three-goal advantage, and they were coasting to the three points with the confidence of League leaders.
But in the closing eight minutes, two rapid goals from Ilija Nestorovski and Lazar Samardzic had the 50,000 spectators at the Stadio Maradona at the edge of their seats and gnashing at their nails in the hope that their team does not drop points from a winning position.
It was with relief that they witnessed Napoli hang on until the final whistle for maximum points. The result means they increased their lead at the top of the table over AC Milan and Lazio, who play on Sunday.
Udinese, who have lost seven straight games, find themselves in sixth.
Napoli will not be in action again until January 4 next year when they visit Inter Milan after the World Cup in Qatar. On the same day, Udinese will be hoping for better fortunes when they welcome Empoli to the Dacia Arena-Stadio Friuli.
