OPINION: DELTA 2015 GUBER: THE CHALLENGE BEFORE THE UPU

By my understanding of the unambiguous Ovwiamughe Declaration, the thrust of Urhobo interest in the Delta state 2015 governorship, the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) went overboard when it staged the very belated selection of sole Urhobo aspirant for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary won by Sen. Ifeanyi Okowa.

It is understandable that UPU jumped at the purported face saving Greek-gift by evidently drowning Government Emmanuel to failingly tilt the PDP ticket towards Chief David Edevwie, protege of Chief James Ibori who remains on a sabbatical in a London prison. The calculation by the Urhobo apex leadership organ was obviously to have an all Urhobo candidacies for the 2015 governorship. However, the event of the PDP primary and it’s outcome should convince Chief Joe Omene and the leadership of UPU that the PDP was bent on shifting power to Delta North and consequently has sustains it’s lingering disdain for the Urhobo nation as entrenched by the Ibori/Uduaghan political dynasty.

The glaring challenge that poses for UPU is that Urhobo must wast no time in banking on plan B. Plan B by the Ovwiamughe declaration is to mobilize Urhobo bloc votes for the best alternate party, All Progressives Congress (APC) if it gives it’s ticket to an Urhobo and also reach out to our friendly neighbors for their support.

The APC at its governorship primary at Asaba convincingly proved it respects the letters of the Ovwiamughe Declaration when delegates across geographical divides in Delta state supported the candidacy of Olorogun O’tega Emerhor with overwhelming votes, 3584 out of total vote cast of 3752.

The APC statement that it’s hope to arrest power from the ruling PDP rests squarely on an Urhobo candidacy was so loud to the extent that even Fidelis Tilije, the only real challenge against Emerhor at the primary could not poll a single vote from his immediate Ukwani constituency.

With the key primaries over, the permutations are collapsed. The fight for Government House 2015 now is clearly between grass rooted and very sellable Sen. Okowa and APC’s symbol of change, Olorogun Emerhor, who if supported will uproot the Ibori political structure that has held the state down since 1999.

Strong as the Okowa candidature seems, the past sixteen years of regressive governance the PDP has given to Deltans has continued to fuel a mass move for absolute change for the ruling party irrespective of who it fields for the 2015 ultimate battle.

That mass move was what was demonstrated at the Oshilimi Arcade when Deltans from South, North and Central spoke with one voice in the choice of Emerhor as APC candidate. The task before UPU therefore is to ensure that it fields a sole governorship candidate to upstage the PDP which has rejected its offer come 2015.

The ultimate challenge before UPU is to ensure that there is no fighting within to divide the majority Urhobo votes. The fear is rife that Chief Great Ovedje Ogboru cast a danger towards ensuring that Urhobo fields a sole candidate against the PDP in the coming election.
