December 23, (THEWILL) – Cameroon goalkeeper, Andre Onana, who was cut from his country’s World Cup squad last month, has announced his retirement from international football.

After a heated argument with head coach, Rigobert Song, who reportedly took issue with his goalkeeping style, Onana was kicked out of the tournament in Qatar and promptly left the camp in Qatar.

It happened that at a training session, Song berated Inter Milan’s shot-stopper for taking too many chances with his feet, which led to an argument between the two. The ex-Liverpool and West Ham player stated that when he went up to the goalkeeper to discuss his performances, the goalkeeper became emotional and shied away from him.

In a lengthy message on social media, he announced his retirement from Cameroon duties and his determination to leave all international football behind, but promising to “continue to support as a fan, just as the more than 27 million Cameroonians do at every match. I can only thank all those who trusted me and believed that I could add and contribute to this team.”

Throughout his six-year career, Onana amassed 34 caps for Cameroon and was instrumental in the team’s third-place performance at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.
