BEVERLY HILLS, February 01, (THEWILL) – Senior Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, on Monday said he is not aware of the imminent announcement of a new police chief.

Current IGP, Mohammed Adamu, is expected to leave office today, Monday, as he attains the retirement age.

However, speaking on Channels TV, Shehu said the president is currently away and no one knows what the next move will be.

“The President returns to Abuja on Tuesday. He should be on his desk by Wednesday. I don’t know when he will do this. One thing I can assure you is that in places sensitive like that, there is no vacuum that will subsist, so therefore the system will take care of itself”, he said.

However, many groups have called for the appointment of the highest-ranking Igbo as the next IGP.

But Shehu said “the President will rather have an Inspector-General of Police who will make you and I safer, protect life and property than one who is more pronounced by his tribal marks.”

Adamu, who is the 20th IGP the country has produced, was appointed as the police boss by President Muhammadu Buhari, replacing Ibrahim Kpotun Idris of Niger state on January 15, 2019.

He has spent his 35 years in the force, breaking through ranks to become the boss of the police force. He was enlisted on February 2, 1986.

His mates, including a former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), DIG Ibrahim Lamorde, DIG Michael Anthony Ogbizi, and AIG Mohammad Mustafa, will also bow out in style after years of service.

There were, however, hopes that Adamu’s tenure may be extended by the president in order to allow him to execute some reforms in the police force, though this may be challenged.
