BEVERLY HILLS, April 1, (THEWILL) – Barcelona Femini has been in impervious form this season. On the domestic front in the Primera Iberdrola, their perfect 21 matches so far have shown no side capable of beating or even drawing a match result against them. As a result, they have attained centurion levels in goal tally with their goal difference of 100.

In Europe, they have carried that form to see the team progress through to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League after their second leg tie against English side Manchester City on Wednesday. Although Lluís Cortés’ ladies were unable to win at the Academy Stadium of City, they still sailed through to the semifinals on aggregate owing to their 3-0 first leg victory at home.

City began the day’s encounter on the front foot dominating play from the middle of the park but the first clear chances went the way of Barca. Defenders Marta Torrejón and Andrea Pereira went close for the visitors but could not find the target. However, they were early warning shots for City to think about.

Intent to score and give their qualification for the semis a chance, the hosts pressed forward incessantly but Barca’s rock solid defense held tight in the early period. Janine Beckie, whose initial attempt at goal was stopped by Sandra Panos, in goal for the visitors, successfully found the net in the 20th minute to put City in front.

Barca’s response to going behind was swift and almost resulted in an equaliser after neither of a double opportunity from Caroline Graham Hansen and Oshoala found their way into the net. Five minutes before the break, Oshoala went just wide as she tried again for goal.

Both sides went into half time with City leading by that lone goal while Barca had not made optimum use of their chances though they still had the upper hand in terms of the aggregate score. Another chance to level the scores fell to Oshoala early in the second period when she came one-on-one with City keeper, Ellie Roebuck, but the keeper stopped the Nigerian striker from scoring.

However, the Barca forward was to finally beat Roebuck a minute shy of the hour mark to provide the visitors with a vital away goal. Though Samantha Mewis netted a second for City in the 68th minute from the penalty spot to brighten City’s chances, Barca held on to lose for the day but go through on aggregate.
