January 19, (THEWILL) – Nigeria sprinter and Middle Tennessee State University student, Alaba Akintola, made history on Tuesday, by breaking a 20-year-old school record at the Commodore Challenge.

Akintola, a Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, competed in both the 60m and 200m events and came out on top, setting a new personal best time in the 60m with a time of 6.59 seconds. This time also makes him the 13th fastest Nigerian in history and a top 5 time on the 2023 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) list for the event.

The Ondo-born sprinter’s time of 6.59 seconds in the 60m replaces a 20-year-old record set by NCAA champion, Mardy Scales. Akintola’s impressive performance at the Commodore Challenge earned him the title of Conference USA (C-USA) Athlete of the Week. He also broke a 17-year-old record and set a career-best in the 200m with a time of 20.72 seconds at the 2022 C-USA indoor Championship, securing him first place in the finals.

Last season, he ran a time of 20.44 seconds in the men’s 200m semi-finals at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship and reached the men’s 100m semi-finals at the same event with a time of 10.25 seconds.

Akintola will be looking to continue breaking records at the Vanderbilt Invitational Championship in Nashville, Tennessee from January 20 to 21.
