Zielinski Brace Help Napoli Sink Liverpool 4-1

September 08 (THEWILL) – Piotr Zielinski scored two goals and provided an assist, as Liverpool’s season-long struggles continued with a humiliating 4-1 loss against Napoli in their worst UEFA Champions League defeat since 1966.

With just two victories through six English Premier League games, Jurgen Klopp’s team has struggled this season and, in Naples, Zielinski’s penalty put them behind after just five minutes.

Victor Osimhen’s penalty kick was saved by Alisson just 13 minutes later, but Napoli had a 3-0 lead at the break, thanks to goals from Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Giovanni Simeone, the latter of whom was playing in his first Champions League match in place of an injured Osimhen.

After the break, Zielinski again finished past Alisson, and Luiz Diaz’s bending attempt was only a meagre consolation for Liverpool in the Group A match as pressure will begin to mount on Klopp, especially after the sacking of Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea earlier in the day.

The Reds will seek some redemption when they welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers to Anfield on Saturday and get their season quickly back on track before too long. For Napoli, a visit from Spezia in Serie A will be their next port of call on the same day.
