December 08, (THEWILL) – A late equaliser saw UEFA Champions League holders Chelsea draw 3-3 with Zenit Saint Petersburg on Wednesday night, ending Chelsea’s hopes of winning Group H. Juventus’ win against Malmo relegated Chelsea to second place and a potentially tougher match in the last 16.

The Blues got off to a quick start and were up 1-0 as Andreas Christensen flicked on a Ross Barkley corner and into the path of Timo Werner, who tapped in on the line.

Chelsea’s intensity dipped soon after, and despite Mason Mount’s chance to double his side’s lead, Zenit drew level when the dangerous Claudinho flicked in an exquisite Douglas Santos cross.

Only minutes later, the hosts took the lead as Chelsea’s defence parted unexpectedly, allowing Sardar Azmoun to gallop through on goal, around Kepa Arrizabalaga, to slot into an empty net.

In the second half, Thomas Tuchel’s side drew level through to a beautiful team play that concluded in Werner slipping in behind the Zenit backline to square for Romelu Lukaku to make it 2-2.

When Werner scored his second, it appeared as if the visitors had taken all three points. The German took advantage of space in the area offered by replacement Christian Pulisic’s assist to score his second and his team’s third goal on the night.

But, Magomed Ozdoev smashed in a magnificent half-volley from the edge of the box in stoppage time to earn Zenit a thoroughly deserved point.

Chelsea will face a group winner in the last 16 after the final whistle ensured that they finished second in their group. The draw for the next stage will take place on Monday.
