Your Performance In Office Not Determined By Political Party – Wike

August 09, (THEWILL) – Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has said the performance of a leader is not determined by political parties, but by the individual.

The governor said it is wrong for people to think that leadership is a function of a political party, when it is actually about the mindset of the individual.

Wike spoke on Tuesday, during the inauguration of the dualised Ogbunuabali-Eastern Bypass Road in Port Harcourt.

After hosting two governors on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (Dave Umahi and Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Ebonyi and Lagos states respectively) on Monday, for the commissioning of the flyover, Wike on Tuesday, hosted another high-profile APC member, Senator Aliyu Wamakko.

Wike, who downplayed the role of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in his administration, argued on Tuesday that his performance had nothing to do with being a member of the party.

According to the governor, “Leadership is not about the party, leadership is about the individual.

“Party is only a vehicle to actualise your ambition, to be able to tell your people I have this capacity, I have this quality to render services to you.

“If you take me away today from PDP to another party, I will still perform. So, it is not because I’m in the PDP that I’m performing.”

Wike, whose membership of the PDP has come under serious scrutiny in the last two months, made it clear that “It is because I have that passion for my people. It is because I have the commitment to serve my people.

“Take me to YPP, allow me to become whatever I will become there, I will perform. Take me to any party, I will perform. So, it is not the party that makes you perform.”

Wike said while others had used the economic hardship as an excuse not to render leadership and service to their people, he found a more rewarding way to sustain the delivery of projects in Rivers.

He restated his commitment to service, insisting his performance is not a measure of membership of the PDP, but rather his undying love, passion, and commitment to render effective service to the people.

The Rivers governor has continued his outburst against the PDP after he lost the presidential ticket to former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, as well as the vice-presidential slot to his Delta counterpart, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa.

Inaugurating the Ogbunuabali-Eastern Bypass Road, former governor of Sokoto State, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, said Wike has demonstrated that he has the capacity to serve the Rivers people.

Senator Wamakko said any well-meaning government should serve to satisfy the yearnings and aspirations of the governed. He noted that as a talk and do governor, Wike has done adequately well for his people.
