November 15, (THEWILL) – As the world marks “Diabetes Day”, the Chief Executive officer, IKON Health Foundation, Pharm. Ikenna Ogwuegbu, has called for regular blood sugar checks, in order to avoid diabetes.

Pharmacist Ogwuegbu, who gave this advice through his social media handle, noted that World Diabetes Day provides an opportunity to raise awareness of diabetes as a global public health issue, which he said, needs to be done collectively and individually, for better prevention, diagnosis and management of the condition.

This year’s theme; “Access to Diabetes Education”, underpins the larger multi-year theme of ‘Access to care’, in the lead-up to 14 November, World Health Organisation, WHO, will highlight not only the challenges but more importantly the solutions, to scaling-up access to diabetes medicines and care.

According to him, WHO’s World Diabetes Day activities cover issues ranging from championing the priorities of people living with diabetes in advocacy to the Global Diabetes Compact, which Ogwuegbu said, drives efforts globally to reduce the risk of disease; and ensures access to treatment and care.

He, therefore, advised that being diagnosed early is important for all types of diabetes, emphasising that it can save lives, prevent medical emergencies, and reduce the risk of life-changing complications later.
