Wolves Confirm Exit Of Their Manager After 2020/2021 Season

BEVERLY HILLS, May 21, (THEWILL) – West Midlands English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers have announced the set departure of head coach Nuno Espírito Santo from Molineux after Sunday’s match against Manchester United, by mutual agreement.

The 47-year-old joined Wolves in 2017 and, after a six-year absence, shepherded Wolves to the Premier League as champions of the English Football League (EFL) Championship, the second tier of English football. And, he is credited for recording back-to-back seventh placed finishes in the stiff competition of the Premiership.

Both finishes, with a record points-total for Wolves in the Premier League of 59 in the second seventh finish, represented the club’s highest Premier League rank and their highest in the English top flight since the 1979/1980 season, when they finished sixth. Espírito Santo also qualified Wolves for the Europa League for the first time since 1980/1981.

The gifted manager helped the Wolves he managed become the first team of the club’s history to reach the quarter-finals of European competition since the last time a Wolves side managed such, nearly 50 years.

The man said of his time at Molineux with Wolves: “Since the first day we arrived at Compton, our ambition was to make a positive change and push this football club forward, and I am proud to say that we did that every single day. We achieved our goals, we did it with passion and we did it together.

“Firstly, I want to thank the supporters, who have all played such an important part in helping us reach new heights for Wolves, and the people of the city, who embraced us and made us feel at home.

“I, of course, want to thank all of the staff at Wolves, for their support and total commitment, every single day.

“Most importantly, I want to thank each-and-every player that we’ve worked with since the day we started, for their loyalty, their dedication, hard work and talent. They are the ones who have made this amazing journey possible for us.”

He rounded up on an inspiring note: “Sunday will be a very emotional day, but I am so happy that the fans will be back in Molineux and we can share one last special moment together, as one pack.”

Jeff Shi, club Executive chairman also remarked on having Espírito Santo at Wolves: “Nuno has brought us some incredibly special moments at Wolves that will never be forgotten, but every chapter comes to an end.

“His loyalty and dedication over the last four years has been immeasurable, and we cannot thank him enough for the progress he has made for Wolves.

“Sunday was already going to be a very special day, welcoming our supporters back for the first time in more than a year; but it will also now be a fitting goodbye for someone who will forever remain an important part of Wolves history.”

Espírito Santo was awarded the Premier League Manager of the Month at three different occasions for an exceptional month of matches and results in September 2018, June 2020 and October 2020. On Saturday, May 4, 2019, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Sport by the University of Wolverhampton.

He exits the club as its fifth longest serving manager of the post-war era.
