Why I Won’t Apologise For 2010 World Cup Goal Miss – Aiyegbeni

BEVERLY HILLS, January 27, (THEWILL) – Former Super Eagles striker, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, says he won’t apologise to Nigerians concerning the open goal he missed in the 2010 FIFA World Cup Group B match between Nigeria and South Korea.

The former Everton striker disclosed this during an interview tagged Live with Yak on NationTV on Wednesday.

According to Yakubu, he won’t apologise to Nigerians because he had scored so many goals for Nigeria and also sacrificed a lot.

He said: “I won’t apologise at all. Why should I? I have scored so many goals for Nigeria too. I have sacrificed a lot for the country. Did anyone apologise to me?

“I cannot apologise because it wasn’t a deliberate miss. I seriously wanted to score. But it wasn’t to be. So many strikers have missed chances too and nobody will apologise so I won’t.”

The 35-year-old star who started his career with Julius Berger FC in Lagos as a teenager in the Nigerian Premier League and was later loaned to Portuguese club Gil Vicente before going to the United Kingdom to pay in the Premier League with over 250 appearances, playing for Everton FC, Middlesborough FC, Portsmouth FC, and Blackburn, announced his retirement from active football on his 35th birthday in 2017.
