February 09, (THEWILL) – Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state, has said that the choice of Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON), for the training of civil servants in the state was due to its professional competence and capacity.

Playing host to the Director General of ASCON, Mrs Cecilia Gayya at the Benue Peoples House Makurdi on Wednesday, he noted that with the relief from ASCON in the training of civil servants in Benue state rather than in Lagos is a welcome development.

“Henceforth, the training of civil servants in Benue state will be a yearly affair. ASCON has the capacity with experts that will add value and promote professionalism in the service and make things better for the state.”

Governor Ortom expressed optimism that as civil servants, they will come out of the training with fresh ideas for the good of the state, as it will also increase their knowledge to advise on policies that would put the political class from falling into act that will put them on collision course with EFCC.

While saying the displacement of persons including civil servants has distorted their stability in office, assured his administration to sustain the anti open grazing law of 2017 with no apology to any group that is not in line with it.

“Benue government has no apology for the 2017 prohibition of open grazing law. It has reduced farmers/herders crashes and killings. Herders now operate in hinterland, in a gorilla style. We amended the law to attract fines from violators from N2,000 to N50,000″, and directed the auctioning of impounded cows in custody.”

The Director General of the Administrative Staff Council of Nigeria, Mrs Gayya, who was represented by a Director, Mr Goodluck Audu, said the council decided to shift the training of 500 civil servants of Benue state to Makurdi on the request of the state government.

The Director General, who described ASCON as the most astute management institute that provides manpower in the country and other parts of African countries, commended governor Samuel Ortom for showing interest in human capital development.

She assured of continuous training of civil servants; calling on the government to sponsor more programmes for staff like in the area of speech writing and communication skills even as ASCON can also help to develop curriculum for public service in the state.

The Director General said the council is moderate with low charges and has adopted a flexible method by coming to train personnel anywhere on request rather than at its headquarters, in Lagos state.
