White Scores Own-Goal As Newcastle Deal Arsenal’s Top Four Chances Severe Blow

May 17, (THEWILL) – Arsenal’s chances of qualifying for the next season’s UEFA Champions League are no longer in their hands after a disappointing 2-0 defeat at St James’ Park to an inspired Newcastle.

The Gunners knew they had to win against both Newcastle and Everton in the Premier League’s last fixture on Sunday, to be sure of a return to the prestigious European competition for the first time since the 2016/2017 season.

Yet, Mikel Arteta’s charges were second best throughout at Newcastle, who climbed to 12th place, thanks to Ben White’s second-half own goal and Bruno Guimaraes’ late goal.

Given their north London rivals are two points ahead and have a significantly superior goal difference, Arsenal will need to overcome Frank Lampard’s Toffees this weekend and hope Tottenham lose to bottom-placed Norwich.

Chelsea, who are four points ahead of their London rivals, will finish in the top four for the sixth consecutive season as a result of Arsenal’s defeat.
