Manchester United skipper Wayne Rooney will have to sit out Tuesday night’s Champions League game at PSV Eindhoven.

The England forward missed Saturday’s 3-1 Premier League win over Liverpool at Old Trafford after sustaining a hamstring injury in training and will not be rushed back for United’s Group B opener in Holland, although he could be available for Sunday’s trip to Southampton, live on Sky Sports.

Youngsters James Wilson and Andreas Pereira have been added to the travelling squad.

United boss Louis van Gaal said after the win over Liverpool that Rooney was unlikely to recover in time for the trip to the Netherlands.

“I think he is very important for us and I don’t want to take any risks,” he said.

Marouane Fellaini started up front against Liverpool and may reprise that role in Eindhoven.

However, new boy Anthony Martial came off the bench to score the decisive third goal and Van Gaal might opt to use the youngster from the start.

Forward Wilson and midfielder Pereira are also in the squad but they are both awaiting their first appearances of the season.

United are back in the Champions League this season and are alongside PSV, CSKA Moscow and Wolfsburg in Group B.
