June 20, (THEWILL) – Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, extending his drivers’ championship lead in the season’s Formula One competition.

At the start of Sunday’s race, Verstappen took the lead, with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jr. sweeping past second-placed Fernando Alonso. Even though the Dutchman sustained minor front wing damage, he was unaffected and extended his lead. However, Red Bull was dealt a blow when Sergio Perez retired after only eight laps due to more mechanical issues.

It was another sad outing for Haas with yet another early departure as Mick Schumacher sputtered out after 20 laps, failing to record a point in the Grand Prix.

On lap 44, there was some suspense as Verstappen’s crew looked to misjudge a pitstop and he came out behind Lewis Hamilton, who was in second place, but his speed allowed him to pass without difficulty.

Late in the race, Sainz re-challenged Verstappen, but the 2021 champion triumphed, with Hamilton taking the final podium spot and teammate George Russell fourth. After starting at the rear of the grid, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc clawed his way to fifth place.
