December 12, (THEWILL) – After an anxious wait following the dramatic end of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Max Verstappen has been confirmed as the Formula One World Drivers’ Champion for the first time in his career.
The Dutch driver overtook Lewis Hamilton in the final lap to take the victory he craved, taking advantage of the chaos produced by the usage of a safety car.
As THEWILL reported, some, but not all, lapped cars restored their places after Nicholas Latifi’s crash, bringing Verstappen within metres of Hamilton on the track and with new tyres, leaving Hamilton stunned as he overtook the Brit to take victory.
Toto Wolff was unusually quiet after watching his hero miss out on a historic triumph, and his team submitted two official complaints to stewards over the event, both of which were ultimately dismissed.
