December 12, (THEWILL) – After a spectacular one-lap drive to end the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and the 2021 Formula One season, Max Verstappen has won his first world championship.

Lewis Hamilton appeared to have won a record seventh drivers’ championship, but a late safety car disrupted the race’s dynamics, and Verstappen made his move on fresher tyres to capture the title.

The two contenders went into the final race of a thrilling 2021 season locked on points, and the Yas Marina Circuit witnessed a race to remember as Verstappen became the first Dutch world champion and Mercedes retained the constructors’ championship.

Hamilton took the lead off the line after Verstappen’s poor start, but the two cars collided into turn 7 as the Dutchman pushed down the inside. This pulled Hamilton off the track, and it is unclear whether he gained an advantage as a result.

With Hamilton slowing to give back the time advantage he earned over Verstappen, the stewards determined no investigation was necessary. Red Bull, on the other hand, did not relent in their protest.

After Mercedes and Verstappen were pitted, Sergio Perez did an excellent job of holding up Hamilton, closing the gap between the two title rivals to under two seconds and giving the race new life.

Following Antonio Giovinazzi’s retirement from the race, a Virtual Safety Car allowed Verstappen to pit for the second time as Red Bull gambled with their title prospects fading.

Verstappen’s superior performance on the fresh tyres saw the 24-year-old cut Hamilton’s lead from 18 seconds to 13 seconds in only a few laps, setting up a frantic finish.

A Nicholas Latifi crash brought out the Safety Car, bundling up the pack just as it appeared Hamilton had seen off Verstappen. Red Bull gambled again, this time putting Verstappen on soft tyres, and it paid off as their driver beat Hamilton to the chequered flag.
