May 18, (THEWILL) – After reaching an agreement on new collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) on Wednesday, US Soccer will pay its men’s and women’s national teams equally.
The US men’s national team (USMNT) and their female counterparts, the USWNT, have agreed to put all of their earnings into a single pool, with the men’s side making a “notable concession” to include money from the lucrative men’s FIFA World Cup, which will then be divided equally among all players who participate in international matches.
“No other country has ever done this,” U.S. Soccer president Cindy Parlow Cone said. “I think everyone should be really proud of what we’ve accomplished here. It really, truly is historic.”
In February, THEWILL reported that the USWNT and US Soccer had reached an agreement to settle their equal pay litigation.
The women were to receive $22 million in back pay, plus an additional $2 million deposited into an account to support their post-career charity initiatives, according to the settlement. The latter fund allowed each woman to receive up to $50,000.
