September 27, (THEWILL) – The United States of America completed a routing of their European opponents to win the Ryder Cup by a record margin of 19-9 to reclaim the trophy.

The US came into the final day with a commanding 11-5 lead and only expanded it, giving Europe no leave to catch up. America needed 14.5 points to win the competition, while Europe needed 14 points to retain its 2018 victory.

Europe was seeking to continue its dominance in the Ryder Cup competitions in the 21st century, having won seven of the last 10 matchups. But, the United States took back the title in blowout fashion, a performance that will be remembered for a long time to come.

Sunday’s singles scores included:

(Europe) Rory McIlroy defeated Xander Schauffele, 3 and 2

(USA) Patrick Cantlay defeated Shane Lowry, 4 and 2

(USA) Scottie Scheffler defeated Jon Rahm, 4 and 3

(USA) Bryson DeChambeau defeated Sergio Garcia, 3 and 2

(USA) Collin Morikawa drew with Viktor Hovland

(USA) Dustin Johnson defeated Paul Casey, 1 up

(USA) Brooks Koepka defeated Bernd Wiesberger, 2 and 1

(Europe) Ian Poulter defeated Tony Finau, 3 and 2

(USA) Justin Thomas defeated Tyrrell Hatton, 4 and 3

(Europe) Lee Westwood defeated Harris English, 1 up

(USA) Jordan Spieth drew with Tommy Fleetwood

(USA) Daniel Berger defeated Matt Fitzpatrick, 1 up

Rory McIlroy got Europe off to a good start, knocking off Schauffele and what seemed to be a positive comeback for Europe began and ended with that game.

Cantlay, Scheffler and DeChambeau all cruised, leaving the United States just a draw away from clinching the competition. And, that was what Morikawa got against Hovland.

The victorious DeChambeau said of the U.S. fans in attendance: “It’s unbelievable. The atmosphere is absolutely electric, and I wouldn’t want it any other way. It’s quite a scene, one that I’ll remember for a lifetime. As a team, we performed really, really well.”

The goal of the United States golfers was not simply to win Sunday but to dominate.

Cantlay told reporters, “I woke up this morning and I was trying to tell the guys, ‘Let’s get to 20 points,’ because this is going to be the next era of Ryder Cup team for the U.S. side. We’ve got a lot of young guys. I think they’re going to be on teams for a long time, and I wanted to send a message”.

There were those who doubted if the American group could come together as a team, given past rifts between players like DeChambeau and Koepka.

Steve Stricker, the United States’ captain, was quite emotional. He said: “These guys all came together. Two weeks ago they came together. Showed me a lot about this group of guys. They all showed up for the practice rounds, all the assistant captains showed up for the practice rounds. They had a mission this week, and you could tell it. They played great.”

There are six of the top seven players in the official world golf rankings on the United States team. They were expected to win. However, dominating the Cup competition in such a comprehensive fashion is a statement their European counterparts would not forget.
