October 14, (THEWILL) – The United States rallied from behind to defeat rival Costa Rica 2-1 in a CONCACAF Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Thursday.

Sergino Dest scored a remarkable goal as the United States overcame an early deficit to rebound from their shocking setback in Panama – the country’s first defeat during the 2022 qualifying campaign.

Keysher Fuller’s volley found its way past goalkeeper Zack Steffen and into the back of the net in the first minute, putting the United States to the test from the onset.

Dest, the 20-year-old Barcelona full-back, regained parity for the Gold Cup champions in the 25th minute, drifting onto his left foot on the edge of the penalty area and firing a powerful strike into the top corner.

With 24 minutes remaining at the New Crew Stadium, Columbus, Ohio Field, Gregg Berhalter’s USA accomplished their comeback. Costa Rica’s Leonel Moreira, who came on at halftime to replace Keylor Navas, was unable to stop Timothy Weah’s attempt at the near post.

With the result, the United States drew level with archrival Mexico on 11 points and face El Salvador next.
