United Hammer Leipzig 5-0 With Rashford’s Super Sub Hattrick

SAN FRANCISCO, October 28, (THEWILL) – Super sub Englishman Marcus Rashford came off the bench to score a rapidfire hat-trick as Manchester United claimed back-to-back UEFA Champions League wins with a 5-0 hammering of RB Leipzig.

The victory places United top of Group H on six points, three clear of Leipzig and Paris Saint-German, who were 2-0 winners over Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday.

Leipzig were atop the Bundesliga table ahead of the game after an unbeaten start to the season in all competitions. But in this UCL encounter, they were comprehensively dismantled by the Red Devils.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side took a first-half lead with a goal crafted by the dynamic play of Paul Pogba after fellow midfielder Fred won the ball with him on the left flank.

The France international cleared past four Leipzig’s players as he burst forward from midfield and slipped a clever pass into Mason Greenwood. The young English winger then clinically guided an angled finish into the net. The goal stood after a tight VAR offside check.

It meant Pogba registered an assist in back-to-back Champions League games for the very first time.

As if shaken awake, the visitors dominated the remainder of the half. But, the game was quickly beyond them when Rashford was introduced in Greenwood’s place just after the hour.

Rashford began his hattrick by latching on to a pass over the top from Bruno Fernandes. The forward broke clear of the Leipzig defence before slotting home. Another VAR confirmation was required to show his run had begun in United’s half. The goal stood.

The England striker added a second with an emphatic low finish after the Red Devils stole possession high up the field before the home side were awarded a penalty when Martial was tripped.

Rashford declined to take the spot-kick which allowed returning forward Anthony Martial to register his first goal of the season. But, Rashford still had time to complete an emphatic treble in the second minute of injury time, drilling home clinically.

The message was clear in the end: United mean business! Leipzig had not been beaten this season in all competitions. United recording their biggest UCL victory since 2013 against them is very significant.

With consecutive fixtures against Istanbul Basaksehir ahead, United could wrap qualification for the knockout stages with two games to spare.

They can thank Rashford for that. He added fire to their game off the bench and a piece of history as he became only the second United player to score a hat-trick as a substitute after none other than Solskjaer’s treble against Nottingham Forest in February 1999 in the Premier League.

The United striker has grabbed the headlines off the pitch in recent weeks with his charitable work for feeding vulnerable children, but his football stock will be just as high after such a clinical exhibition of finishing.

United are back in Premier League action on Sunday when they face Arsenal at Old Trafford. Leipzig are away to Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga 24 hours earlier.
