March 24, (THEWILL) – Russia and Turkey have joined the UK and Ireland in submitting bids to host Euro 2028, according to UEFA.
The United Kingdom and Ireland were thought to be the only bidders for the competition, but Russia surprised everyone by announcing its ambition to organise a tournament in either 2028 or 2032.
UEFA has now confirmed that Turkey submitted a proposal before the March 23 deadline as well.
Turkey, together with Russia, also bid to host in 2028 or 2032, although the United Kingdom and Ireland are primarily focused on the former.
Italy has also put in a proposal to host the 2032 Euros.
Those countries will now have to meet UEFA’s criteria for hosting the tournament, with a final decision on the 2028 and 2032 tournaments expected in September 2023.
The news of Russia’s bid has caused considerable consternation, given that the country is currently engaged in a war with Ukraine and has been heavily sanctioned by the football community.
The move has not gone over well with UEFA, which has warned Russia that if it goes ahead with its proposal, it may face additional sanctions.
Although the Russian Football Union is still a member of UEFA and has not been sanctioned, it is possible that their membership might be suspended if they continue with their proposal.
