January 28, (THEWILL) – At a date and location to be determined, Tyson Fury will defend his WBC heavyweight title against Dillian Whyte.
Frank Warren, Fury’s promoter, won the purse bid on Friday by paying $41,025,000, the highest amount ever paid in boxing. Fury is eligible for $32.8 million in prize money, while Whyte is eligible for $8.2 million.
According to the information available, the battle between these two British heavyweights will take place on April 23 at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium. Warren’s Queensberry Promotions and Top Rank Boxing, who will co-promote the fight, have broadcast rights to the PPV with BT Sport in the United Kingdom and ESPN in the United States.
After avenging a loss to Alexander Povetkin in August 2020 with a fourth-round TKO of the same opponent in March 2021, Whyte (with a career record of 28 wins – 19 by knockout and 2 losses) is the WBC’s number one challenger and Fury’s mandatory opponent.
Whyte and former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua were rumoured to be working on a “step aside” pact to allow Fury to fight new unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk, but that plan fell through.
Fury (with a 31-0-1 career record) is coming off an 11th-round KO of Deontay Wilder in October, which was widely regarded as the best fight of 2021.
