BEVERLY HILLS, February 13, (THEWILL) – The United States Senate today acquitted former President Donald Trump on an impeachment charge of inciting an insurrection.

Coming after over a month after a horde of Trump supporters stormed the US Capitol, Trump’s vindication came after the Senate fell short of the required votes to convict President Joe Biden’s immediate predecessor.

A majority of senators did vote to convict Trump (57 to 43) but fell short of the requisite two-thirds, or 67 votes, needed to convict him.

It was a second time acquittal for Trump whose impeachment trial while in office had also fallen through.

Seven GOP senators voted to convict Trump and these were: Mitt Romney of Utah, Ben Sasse of Nebraska, Richard Burr of North Carolina, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania.

Trump is the first US President in history to be tried for impeachment after leaving office.

However, the Senate, by not convicting and barring Trump from holding public office in the future, left open the possibility that Trump, 74, could contest again for the post of US President.
