September 25, (THEWILL) – William Troost-Ekong, the Super Eagles’ interim captain, has now been added to the growing list of injured players as the Nigeria national team’s injury situation worsens.

Officials of the national team announced Ekong has subsequently returned to England for further treatment just 48 hours before the eagerly awaited friendly between the Super Eagles and the Nigerian Desert Foxes.

Ekong featured as team captain when Alex Iwobi and Cyriel Dessers scored in a 2-2 draw against Algeria’s “B” team as the latter prepared for the African Nations Championships (CHAN).

While there have been a number of players who have left the Super Eagles camp injured in the past (including; Ahmed Musa, Victor Osimhen, Sadiq Umar, Henry Onyekuru, and Samuel Chukwueze, among others), Ekong is the second player to do so after Wilfred Ndidi.

The 29-year-old will have to be replaced by Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro in the central defensive position ahead of the match on Tuesday, which will begin at 8 PM local time.
